In August 2006 a number of people who had previously expressed an interest in Rapper received an email saying that some swords had been obtained, we had a teacher and a musician and a venue which both had a bar and was willing to let us practice for free.
We were in business!
Of those who came along on that first Saturday in September very few had any great experience of Rapper: we were Scottish Country Dancers, Appalachian Cloggers and some with no particular dance experience at all. We did have two great teachers though as well as a couple of Northumbrian Pipers. And so we started off - these were rapper swords, this was a walk round and a clash on five, this was single guard... And, of course, there was Rapper stepping with which to get to grips.
In March 2007 we settled upon a name, an outfit, and a plan which is to be of a sufficient standard that we can dance out for the first time in the summer of 2007. By sufficient standard we mean that we will be good enough to call ourselves Rapper dancers and stand in that proud tradition without incurring mockery and derision if seen by someone who really knows what they are doing.
